ZILKHA BIOMASS SELMA

ZBS is the first of its kind.

In August 2015 the Zilkha Biomass Selma (ZBS) plant dispatched  its first commercial shipment of Zilkha Black™ pellets  from Mobile Alabama to the port of Rouen in France. ZBS has an annual production capacity of 240,000 metric tons.  This plant is the first full-scale commercial Black pellet facility in the world, supplying our durable, water-resistant pellets to the biomass energy market.

ZBS is certified under multiple forest sustainability programs to demonstrate our commitment to keeping forests healthy. Feedstock for this pellet plant is sourced from the low-value fiber of sawmills and sustainably managed forests in Alabama; a state where wood growth continues to outpace wood harvests. Biomass for ZBS is collected in the form of sawdust, chips, shavings, tree-tops, limbs and thinnings.

This plant was built on the former site of Dixie Pellets, and has been retrofitted with ZBE’s patented process technology to produce the Zilkha Black™ pellet.  The construction of ZBS and its continued operation has helped stimulate the rural economy of Dallas County, and supports over two hundred jobs across several industries.

In early 2017, the mill was idled due to the loss of our customer contract and failure to pay for shipment. Working jointly with our investors, the mill was refinanced in 2018 and is in production today.
